Gilbert, the Cat of the Day
Name: Gilbert
Age: Ten years old
Gender: Male
Kind: Orange Tabby
Home: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada

Gilbert is now ten years old. He came into our lives in the late summer days of 2003, at about four to six months of age, if I recall correctly. Gilbert came with the name 'Gilbert', we did not give it to him, and believe me, he is a Gilbert. He lives in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada with my mom and her other cat, Sullivan. I've since moved out, but still visit often.

Gilbert, well, he thinks he is a human. I believe it had to do with his upbringing. See, my mom and I would talk to him and treat him as if he was a real person. Oh sure, time to time we would do squeaky hi-pitched voices "oh my gosh, a cute kitty cat!" but aside from that it was, "Gilbert, what are you thinking? Gilbert! Mom's home! etc.." Not that he would eat at the table, but we'd lift him up to show him what was what if he were curious about anything, really.

He has been quite an amazement the time I spent living at home with him around. He could open kitchen cupboards, climb ladders, catch flies, has a strange affection for bread or baked goods, and one time I even caught him jumping up and used both paws to try turning a door knob (I actually have a dimly lit video of this). He's quite affectionate to my mom, sleeping on her bed most nights. Although he is not a lap cat, you can tell she is 'mom' for him. Famous quote from my stepfather; "I've been replaced with a cat?!" Oh which also brings me to why we have Gilbert to begin with.

You see it was because of my stepfather, who worked as a appliance repair technician, he had a client who had a litter of kittens she needed to have adopted. So he chose the orange one. Around the same time he also purchased some large speakers and did not want them getting ruined by cat claws. So he 'boarded' Gilbert at my mom's house, temporarily. Well, if you've read this far you know how much he has touched our lives. My mom just fell in love with the little furball, and in the end there was no giving him back. So, that pretty much sums up how mom and I got our first cat.

We do not know Gilbert's particular breed of cat, but obviously we know he is an orange tabby. And he is much loved.
