This
Miriam, she was a Seal Point Cornish Rex cat. Miriam was extremely
special since she was still energetic, playful and affectionate to the end,
even though she only had one kidney (she lost eighteen years ago in surgery) and
Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, a heart condition. She also made certain to look
out for and comfort her sister, Sarah. Sarah was bigger than Miriam but
Miriam was definitely bolder.
They changed my life and every day I am so grateful. It is with great regret
to say that Miriam passed away just last month. I purchased Miriam and Sarah
from a pet store in 1994 when I was in my early 20s and didn't have two
nickels to rub together. I wasn't sure I even liked cats, but thought they
would secure a relationship I was in. HA! Well, the relationship ended and I
was left with the two greatest gifts my life has ever known.
They were my first cats, and so they were also my first Cornish Rex cats. I
learned quickly they were unlike any other cat I have ever known - very
active, eager to please, intelligent, and incredibly affectionate. (Head
butts and loud motor purrs included.) They loved their "human being heating
pad" and made sure to remind me when it was their bedtime so I would warm
things up for them first. lol
They were crossed with Siamese (hence the Seal Point) so incredibly chatty
when something was of prime importance. (Like their blanket warmer
accidentally shut off or there was a loose bug in the house - Miriam was very
sure I needed to know about it!) They loved the game "chase" and when I would
stop they'd sneak up to try again to get my attention to go after them repeatedly.
Sarah was much more the relaxed and mellow type along for the ride, and
Miriam was much more of a strategic planner. The two of them together made a
perfect team. Kind of like a Thelma and Louise.
They were my rock through many ups and downs, and never left my side. They
made a move with me from Arizona to California in 1999 and then back to
Arizona in 2012. I believe Miriam and
Sarah were placed in my life to experience the true joy of unconditional
companionship and care that only animals can provide.
Today, August 10, would've been Miriam and Sarah's 20th birthday. (Miriam
died 6/12/14 and Sarah died 9/05/13). Both lived to their 19th year, one a
little longer than the other.
They both loved to play with a small toy "mousie". (There were many
replacements over the years.) This was a very important toy to them both.
Every time I would go on a trip I would lay out my suitcase a few days ahead
of time to pack clothes, etc. Every single time, without fail, I would go to
zip up the suitcase hours before I was to leave and their mouse toy would be
in it. I never saw who put it in there, but it wasn't me. I think that was
their way of making sure I wouldn't forget them. And certainly I never will. :)
