Gender: Female
Kind: Tortoiseshell
Home: La Crescenta, California, USA

   Dear Aggie,

You did not stay with me as long as I would have liked, but then another day, another month, another year, would not have been enough. You actually did stay a good long time for a cat. Though it was fifteen years, it went by so very fast.

We bonded that first time I saw you, in the cage in the pet store. I held out my finger, you left your food and sniffed it and then stared at me with wide golden eyes. You stood there and didn't go back to your food. I wanted to bring you home that minute and a week later I did.

As time went on though, I learned that a tortoiseshell cat can be a little persnickety. Lots of times your behavior, though rude, still caused us to laugh. You were a terror at the vet. You could hiss at even us when we crossed you, but it was really just a big bluster.

You purred with great gusto when you were happy, you sniffed to make sure you caught the scent of skin you loved, and you would kerthunk beside me in the night bringing your scent and warmth. At any given time during the day when you appeared in front of me and made eye contact, your eye contact with your liquid eyes, was intense and direct. There was a winsome quality about it.

So Aggie, just as I told you that last day I held you, you are and were beautiful and can never be replaced. Other cats will never be the combination of snooty and tender and have that incredibly soft fur that you had. Something in the mix will just be off, I am reconciling myself to that, slowly. Before you left I could not imagine my world without you, the Aggie-less world. Now that you have left I know that it was good that I didn't waste my time imagining what it would be like. It was so intensely fun to have you share our home.

With paw prints on my heart, but missing from so many other places in the house, I remain, yours.
