Flower the Tortoiseshell, the Cat of the Day
Name: Flower
Age: Twelve years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Tortoiseshell
Home: Thornhill, Ontario, Canada

This is our little girl, Flower. We adopted her one fall after our beloved cat Tanner disappeared. After searching and searching and many tears, we decided to get two new adult cats. Since we no longer will allow our cats to go outside, we thought they'd be company for each other.

We adopted Flower along with Monty, from Forgotten Ones Cat Shelter, a wonderful rescue organization. Flower was brought there in the brink of time from a high-kill shelter. She waited a long time for her forever home because she is very shy and curled up into a ball and hid her head whenever people would look at her. The girls at the shelter really loved her and thought she'd be a good fit for us.

It took a lot of work, but she eventually got much more comfortable. She is a tiny girl, about four pounds, and dominates her adopted cat brother Monty, who is more than twice er size at ten pounds! Every morning and evening she gets locked in the family room to eat her meal so Monty won't bother her. He prefers her food, and she is very protective of it!

Flower is quite moody and as a result we call her Dr. Jekyl and Mrs. Hyde. She gets quite feisty if we pick her up and she doesn't want to be held. When she is feeling affectionate, she chirps and mews and cuddles. She has the loudest purr in the world!

She is afraid of her human daddy and even though he tries to be quiet and gentle around her, she cringes and runs away when he tries to pet her. She has peed by the door to the garage a few times and we think it's because the garage is his territory and she's showing her displeasure with him. We now put a bowl of dry food in that spot because we've heard cats won't go to the bathroom where they eat. We hope it works.

She loves her little toy mice and carries them all over the house, crying and crying. She also steals socks, clean or dirty, from the kid's rooms and cries and moans to let us know what she's done.

Every morning Flower waits behind the door while Monty does his business in the litter box and then ambushes him. He always acts surprised even though this is a daily occurence. She chases him all over the house and corners him. They have a little sparring contest and then she loses interest and goes to sleep, usually on a pile of clean laundry!

If another cat comes to the back door, Flower goes crazy and since she can't get at it, she beats Monty up instead!

She's a challenging little girl, but we love our Flower a lot!
