Monkey
is special because he is the strongest, most determined, camera loving
cat I have ever met. Monkey, formally known as Fudge, was born at my old
riding stables to one of the many cats found roaming around the place. He was
born with three other brothers and although he wasn't the biggest or the
smartest, he is most definitely the quickest. This is why an event later on
in his life shocked us quite a bit. And to this day I still wonder how it had happened.
We were never meant to own him. We were only supposed to have his two, no doubt
older, brothers. But it ended up with us having all four of them. We got them at
a very early age because their birth home wasn't entirely safe with about 30
odd horses running around and sheepdog that took quite a bit of interest in
them. So we had to feed them through a syringe for about a week or two before
they could finally eat proper kitten food.
But what really makes this cat stand out, is his metal back leg. He had been
missing for around a week before Monks randomly appeared one morning through
the cat flap and collapsed on the dog bed. He had hauled himself over a
number of large fences just to reach our back door, which is slap bang in the
middle of the street, with a broken back leg. But it wasn't a little
fracture, oh no. Monkey had gone all out and pretty much demolished his right
hip. My fast little feline friend hadn't considered the fact that cars are a
lot quicker than himself, even if he is the fastest kitty in the district!
Anyway, it took weeks before I saw my beloved boy again, having been rushed
to the vets and then being moved on to a specialist unit even further away
just to find someone with the ability to heal our broken boy. But eventually
he came back to us, metal plates and all.
He has hardly left the garden since, and that was about five years ago now!
Though as long as I know he's safe, I'm happy for him to live as close to my
bedroom as possible. Well, "our" bedroom as possible. Indeed, my bedroom is
where he spends most of his days now unless the sun decides to show. Which,
when living in England, is pretty rare. It's a bit of a pain for him, as his
bionic back legs can cause hassle for him in the colder days, and there is a
patch on his back where you may receive a bite or a claw if you touch. But as
long as there is a warm pillow to sleep on, treats on the go and a camera
close by, Monkey can put up with most grievances!
