A
little kitten showed up at our property one summer Saturday, starving and
in poor health, and we estimated he had only a few more days left in him. A
bit of care, love, and a whole lot of internal fortitude allows me to now
present to you the same feline, four years later.
His name is Niko, appropriately named for being victorious in his quest for
survival through Bankhead National forest, near our home in Double Springs,
Alabama. He's proven as wonderful a companion as anyone could ever hope to find in
a cat, and on weekends he devotes his time to his two humans, whom he
absolutely adores. Being a natural born barn cat (read "killer"), he keeps a
vigilant eye on our 60 acres, where he rules alone during the week, by
exterminating snakes, lizards, mice, rabbits, squirrels, and to our
consternation, a few birds now and then, just to keep his acrobatic skills appropriately honed.
He is not all work, mind you. Niko absolutely loves to snack on his treats,
talk up a storm, purr as loud as a HEMI, and lounge around in all sorts of
contorted positions, but he truly is a lion at heart since there's no
movement or sound that ever escapes his watchful eyes, even when he is
dreaming. We can't ever imagine our weekend retreat without him as he makes
the place shine, albeit he tends to crowd me in bed, making him a natural
born cuddler as well, I guess. The price one must pay for unconditional love and devotion!
