After
venturing out on my own, it didn't take me long to realize how lonely
an empty apartment could be after living in a home of seven. The feeling of
isolation and anxiety I was facing with the pressures of making a living and
putting myself through college left me drained and depressed. With nothing to
do in my free time most days, I jumped at the opportunity to volunteer at a
local animal shelter.
I have always been an animal lover but I am particularly fond of cats. My
father, who dislikes them, never let me have a pet cat while growing up so I
took every opportunity I could find to visit the cat sanctuary while I volunteered.
Most of the cats were friendly, and some would rather be left alone. The
rainbow of personalities and emotions these silly creatures could display
simply astounded me. But none of the cats showed as much curiosity and
bravery as Onyx did.
She was really small, too skinny and pitch black. But she was also playful,
loving and had a shining personality. The connection was instantaneous. In
the small amount of time I had been visiting her, I had made a decision to
adopt her. As silly as it sounds, I even told her that she would be going
home with me soon. In fact I told just about everybody with in hearing range!
Of course I had nothing for adopting a cat, no carrier or litter box, and I
needed these things before I could adopt her. After three worrisome days
spent wishing she would still be there when I finally was prepared to bring
her home, I set out on a mission to get to the shelter and set things up.
That is where I was sure there would be trouble. Because she is a black cat,
and it was close to October there were rules set in place to really screen
people who try to adopt black cats around that time. But there was no trouble
thankfully and I was able to get her home safely. She meowed the whole car ride home.
After introducing her to her forever home, her quirks quickly came out and
she started to shine even brighter than I thought possible. She loves to hold
conversations with me, even though its normally a one sided conversation
consisting of many different forms of "meow". Her favorite toy is a small
pink mouse plush that she presents to me as a gift after hunting it for hours
every day. Her favorite place to nap is on my lap, and she even likes to ride
around on my shoulder!
I can't begin to describe how thankful I am to have Onyx in my life. As
cheesy as it sounds, she really brightens my day.
