We
got Chester twenty years ago at the humane society at the same time we
got our dog, Rerun. They were both little babies only eight weeks of
age. Chester right from the ge-tgo was our cat. The moment he was in
my hands, he was purring like crazy. That's why I gave him the
warrior's name of Loudpurr. Once we got him home we decided to give
them a bath to wash off all the Humane Society smell from them, so
they could start afresh here. He hated his bath and hated us, he was
growling in the corner, but he was home.
Then came many years of getting to know him, and Chester knowing he
was loved. He loved to sleep on the Chesterfield, strange huh, and in
the cubby hole we have put all of the blankets and towels in. He was
very playful always chasing after his toys, he liked it when we slowly
pulled a piece of string, he would pounce on it and shred it to
pieces, it was his prey. At night it was a constant struggle on our
part to get to sleep, he would prowl the house yowling all the time,
and when we caught him in the act of yowling he would just look at us
and meow as if he wasn't doing anything. Then there was the daily
routine with Rerun, our dog, each time she got close it was his job to
hiss and give her a swipe across the head. She got beat up by him
daily. So naturally we thought he wasn't to fund of her, that was
until one night I saw him in the act of grooming her, licking her ear
and purring at the same time ... then when he noticed me watching he
hissed at her and swiped her across the ear. He did love his sister
but he couldn't be associated with a dog, what would all the other cats think?
Then something horrible happened, our dog Rerun had died in her sleep.
Things changed for him, he no longer pretended like he didn't love
her. He tended to stick to us like glue, because I guess he knew we
were in pain from the loss. We had many years where he was our only
pet, then I got a hamster and I recall taking the hamster out to show
him and he did something very strange I thought. He actually grabbed
the hamster and cuddled with him, wrapping his paws around him and
rubbing his face against him. He was a very sweet cat, he was gentle
and was quite the little cuddle monster, whenever there was a free
lap, it was his lap.
He liked to jump into the bathtub when ever the door was opened to the
bathroom he would go in there and "sing" I guess it what you would
call it. All was going well with him. Then about two years ago we got
our dog Trixie, then a few years after that we got Sadie. Two dogs in
the house. and he wasn't to thrilled over the matter. But he accepted
them into his family. We noticed changes right away, before, when he
would jump there was no hesitation, now it would take him a few tries
before he would take the jump and even then he wouldn't always do it
perfectly and fall down instead. Our little boy was getting old.
The day of June 30th was like any other day to begin with. I went to
work and when I came home I learnt he fell from his cubby hole and was
now limping. He was having a great deal of trouble walking. We went to
the vets knowing that if the diagnosis was bad. we would have to put
him down. Sure enough, we learned that he had a heart problem and the
reason why he might not be walking properly was due to a blood clot.
We knew the best thing to do for him was to let him go. It hurt so
much to watch him leave this world but at the age of twenty he had long
run of life. I liked to think that Rerun was waiting on the other side
of the Golden Gate, wagging her tail in anticipation to be with her
brother once more, and once he crossed the Golden Gate she met him
with a wag of her tail and a kiss on the face, he met her with a purr
and a rub on the cheek. Then Rerun told Chester, "Welcome to your new
home, I know you had a long life - you even surpassed me buy seven years.
Don't be angry at them for putting you down. You and I both know it
was for the best. I missed you terribly, but now that you are here
let's go play. I want to hear everything about the last seven years
and I want to show you everything about whats up here!" I am sure he
answered with an "Okay!" and off they went.
In memory of our dear cat Chester, gone but never forgotten.
