When I arrived at the Schaghticoke, NY library on a November, 2001 day,
I found the librarian on the phone, unsuccessfully trying to get animal
control to pick up a cat with a shattered leg that was under a bush
outside the library. I figured that a shelter would likely euthanize the
cat, so I took her home and then to my vet. He told me that the leg was
too shattered to repair, and that she would need an amputation. In the
meantime, the librarian had put up notices in Schaghticoke, in case
someone was missing their cat.
The cost of an amputation was too much for me, but when I told my "The
Cats Pajamas" email group about the cat, they volunteered their money
and prayers, so the operation was done. The cat weighed only five
pounds, and I thought she was a kitten, but the vet said she could be up
to two years old. I split the difference and settled on one year old.
I gave the cat the "temporary" name Miss Kitty Von Schaghticoke, as my
(late) husband and I thought we had "enough" cats (three) and were
going to find her another home. Thirteen years later, Miss Kitty is
still with me. She was one of a clowder of six for a few years and was a
special friend to Casey (black and white "torn tuxedo), but the others
are gone now except for Blaise, nine-year-old tortie. Miss Kitty
especially likes watching the PBS show "Nature" with me and playing with
shoelaces.
