This is our dear departed old friend Tang who passed away on Sunday, September 13, at the ripe old age of 20.5. A healthy, ill just once in his life, lean, trim orange tiger, he was nonetheless the biggest food mooch we have had. Tang spent every meal glued to my wife's elbow, begging with his persistent short meows. Why? It always paid off. Our cats understand that a bunch of knife cutting at the table means food goodies.
Our oldest son named him and Tang was definitely his cat, but Tang successfully made the leap to us when our son grew up and moved.
Tang's life bridged over 2 groups of our cats. He liked all of the original group and they liked him. But as they passed from old age, he never liked any of the new group, even though all started out nice with him as they were kittens. One cat that didn't have issues with Tang is our beautiful Ragdoll mix Pixel. Tang's crankiness with the other cats carried on and he ended up being a solitary aging cat in our house.
This required protecting Tang from harassment by our youngest cat Echo (a real player) for the last few years. Nothing major, but a nuisance for an aging cat. As a result he liked to nap curled up in a ball on the couch if we were there as he knew he was safe. He adored being petted and brushed, arching his back like a Halloween cat cartoon and chatting at us.
His favorite snoozing spot for 20 years was on the back of the couch under the reading light that we left on just for him, his own personal sun. You do know that cats are really lizards and require heat soaking, right? Six months ago I built a brace behind the couch to prevent him from falling off on the floor while sleeping as he grew weaker.
Our son got to see him for the last time in June and as usual Tang reacted strongly to him even though he hasn't lived here in 9 years. Do cats remember people? Oh yes, they do. And we will remember Tang.
