On June 24th, 2014, I received a call from the local humane society about two kittens that needed a foster home. At a mere 3-4 weeks old, Plankton and Krill came into their new foster home incredibly sick and malnourished - Plankton, the runt, was drastically sicker than his brother, Krill, and could barely breathe, let alone engage in other typical kitten activities. After nursing them back to health for a little over a month, I returned them both to the humane society to begin their journey to adoption.
Unlike other kittens I'd fostered, the loss I felt with Plankton gone was profound and unsettling. Thus, after a nano-second of contemplation, I made the decision to formally adopt him. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made in the 30 years I have been on this planet. Plankton, now a year and a half old, is an adorable spitfire, always playful and spry. He sleeps next to me every single night in the most comforting manner and will undoubtedly be one of the reasons why I will finish my PhD with my sanity relatively intact (...as the saying goes, I work hard so my cat can have a better life).
I've always had cats as pets (in fact, nearly all my baby/childhood photos contain at least one feline in the background), but have never felt such a connection with an animal as I do with Plankton. In fact, he will be the inspiration for my first (and only!) tattoo - I recorded him purring while sleeping on my pillow on night (which he has done since he was a wee kitten and now, despite his solid 13 pounds) and plan to have the sound wave tattooed on my wrist in the near future. Overall, although I'm sure you get many people professing their love for their animals, I can assure you the love that I feel for this cat is unparalleled.
