Shade was born in 2008 on Easter Day. His breed is unknown, some believe Russian Blue. He was the runt of the litter. When him and his siblings opened their eyes, we noticed a problem; whenever his siblings would go to their mother for feeding, it would take Shade a while to get to his mother. Where his brothers and sisters just started walking, poor Shade would still crawl in a very strange way, we began to expect there was a problem.
After a year, maybe a little less, Shade was sleeping next to his brother and father. My mother shouted, "Din Din time!" All the cats ran to the kitchen. Shade's brother and father simply hopped off the couch and went for their food. Shade got up, did a little stretch, he sticks his claws into the edge of the sofa and swung his butt to the ground, let of the couch and went to the food. My father asked me to get my laser pointer and told me to use it to play with the kittens, after they finished eating, I used the laser and the kittens went crazy, tripping over each other to get the red dot. My father said, "I think I know what's wrong with Shade, I think he's blind, put the laser in front of him." I did, and Shade had no reaction.
We took him to a vet and sure enough, my dad was right. The vet told us that Shade's eyes react to light normally, but there is nothing on the inside. All you could see when you looked deep into his eyes was like a green crystal ball with little swirls here and there.
We have been taking good care of Shade, my dad takes him just about everywhere he goes. Although he is blind and will probably never get any bigger, he has memorized our house and my dad's shop. You would never know he was blind until we told you...or he would bump into a wall. The biggest problem however, is he's fearless, he'll climb whatever he can, and then meows for us to get him down. But in the end, we love our blind, little buddy to death.
Side note: Shade has never made a mistake, he has never not used the litter box.
