Millie was a feral cat that came to our porch last fall with her two yellow and white kittens. It took a couple of months before she trusted us enough to let us come near her or her kittens. She was adorably geeky. She would bump against me hard when she wanted to be petted and she would almost knock the food out of my hand when I tried to fill her bowl. She was also very curious. I accidentally locked her in our cellar for a couple of days once before I realized I was hearing her meowing under our floor.
I wanted to make her and her two boys indoor cats because it's a hard, short life for outdoor cats in our neighborhood. One of her kittens has already been killed by a neighbor who used it for target practice. However, it proved impossible to keep her inside because she would attack my other cats (who are also former strays) every time I tried bringing her inside. I couldn't blame her; she had to be a tough girl in order to survive outside. I resisted naming her because I didn't want to become too attached to her if I couldn't take her in.
Unfortunately she became pregnant again before I could get her spayed. I knew something was wrong when I found her lying listless on our porch. We rushed her to the vet and named her Millie on the way there. But it was too late to save her. A kitten had gotten stuck inside her and had died, and the only humane thing that could be done for poor Millie was to put her to sleep. I want to honor her short life, she touched our hearts.
