Abreu was born to a feral mama kitty, Paulie that showed up on our door step one day. Abreu was the friendliest of his 3 litter mates. When he was about a year old, we noticed an injury to his, let's say, boy parts, where is boy bits somehow came out of the scrotum! We hoped they would just dry up and fall off, but after a few days, that clearly wasn't happening and he was showing more signs of pain, swelling and discomfort. Since he was so friendly, I was able to get him into a carrier and off to the vet.
The vet said he probably would've only lived a few more days with his injury. The vet neutered him, gave him a round of antibiotics and vaccines and said we could release him after a few days of rest. Given the $300 price tag I just paid for him to get better, I couldn't bear to throw him back out on the street, so he's been with us ever since.
He's come a long way since he's been with us. He still doesn't like to be held and won't sit on our laps, but he loves his new home, his cat brother Sammy, and his two doggie sisters. Well, he tolerates them. :-) He loves belly rubs chin and ear scritchies and head bumpies. He spends his days going from window to window watching all the wildlife come and go.
His namesake is Jose Abreu, who is a first basemen for the Chicago White Sox. He and all of his litter mates and subsequent litter siblings all had White Sox names, too.
ven though he may never be a lap kitty, we love him to bits and are so glad to share our home with him.
