Phoebe arrived in our garden with her brother Joey in the late '90s. She was probably six months old. Her collar was too tight so we loosened it for her and she wandered off playing. The next time we met Phoebe was with her grand parents at the vet. She was having a check up and we finally realised that she lived a couple of houses away from us. She was a massive bundle of white fluff and very confident. Her owner worked and let her out during the day and inevitably she decided our house - which is manned to serve and adore cats 24 hours a day - was better. When we were due to move we asked if we could take Phoebe with her and he said yes.
Phoebe grew into a large white fluffy cat. She scared our window cleaner but she was a gentle loving cat. She climbed trees, fences and 'visited' all our neighbors and continued to enjoy life to the full. Eating, drinking, playing, sleeping. In June 2019 we found our neighbours' cat unwell in our garden. We called its owner and found out later it had died of cat flu. We weren't worried because our cats were inoculated and due to their ages no longer went outside. Unfortunately a few days later two of our cats started showing symptoms of a cold. Despite many vet visits Phoebe didn't make it. She was 20 and her body couldn't fight the virus. The vet thinks we must have introduced the virus into our home on our feet. We were and still are devastated. We know Phoebe was 'well past her sell by date' but she was so well for a 20-year-old cat it seemed very wrong that an illness she was inoculated for killed her. We miss her everyday. I'm sure she's with Joey playing like a little kitten over the rainbow bridge.
