What makes Calico special is that she is a not only a super sweet senior kitty, but she's also a survivor of an incredibly cruel act. Yesterday marked the fourth anniversary of that event. On March 21st, 2015 she was stuffed into a duffle bag and thrown into the icy waters of the Winnebago River. Miraculously, a couple had witnessed a man throw a bag into the water before he fled. They decided pull the bag ashore without knowing of it's contents..To their amazement they found a beautiful feline. She was very cold, but alive. They contacted the authorities who brought the cat to the Humane Society of North Iowa in Mason City. The volunteers at the shelter named her, Winnie, after the Winnebago river. An anonymous person called the police and identified the man as the cat's owner. Charges were brought against him for animal torture. A man from Minnesota, who recently lost his longtime feline companion, drove to Mason City to adopt Winnie.
Winnie was very cautions around other people. She was ten years old and had only known one home. It took some time to make her comfortable in her new surroundings. It was later found that the Winnie's real name was "Calico". Calico has been with him for four years now. She's the sweetest, most obedient and loyal cat that anyone could want. Calico likes to hang around her cat dad all day while he works. They have a special bond. She also likes to sit in his lap and watch TV and to go outside and take walks around the house.
I've attached some pictures of Calico (Winnie) including the bridge that she was thrown from. The fall had ruptured both her ear drums, but she was otherwise fine. Here's the original news story. Curiosity saved a cat in Mason City, authorities say.
