Gash was abandoned by a family that used to live two houses away from us. He was one of three kittens they let loose to battle the cruel Ohio winter. I had found his sister and brought her to the local Human Society but the other two were nowhere to be found.
Spring came and I had forgotten about the kittens. That is, until one day I saw a bright orange puff ball chasing a rabbit in my back yard. We already had two cats and I decided I would rather give him some of their food to eat than have him kill that bunny. That's when it all began.
I would feed him every day after work. After about two weeks I noticed he had quite a number of burrs tangled in his fluffy tail. After that I kept an eye on his tail. It seemed to be losing fur and his energy level seemed low. I talked it over with my boyfriend and we decided to take him to the vet.
Imagine my shock when the vet pulled away a clump of hair on his tail to reveal an army of maggots. It turned out that someone or something had hit Gash on his hind end, paralyzing his tail. Since he couldn't feel it, he would drag it behind him until it had become infected and then infested. The vet told me that he probably only had a week left before the infection and the maggots ... well, I am sure you can guess the rest.
Our now stubby-butted little buddy has lived with us since July. It was rough adjusting at first, but Gash is finally healthy, happy and one of the sweetest cats I have ever known!
I have to end this story by saying that our two other cats, Swanky and Profit, are also two wonderful, wacky sweethearts! I love them all!
