One day I was in the intake lobby of my local Animal Rescue League when a woman came in with a plastic bucket holding four kittens. They looked to be about five weeks old at most. She had picked them up off the street near her house. The shelter was at max capacity as it was kitten season and told her she'd have to bring them to our county animal control - often a death sentence for feral kittens (and every other animal, tragically). I interrupted and said if this shelter put me on the waiting list to take in the four siblings when space was available, I'd take them home to my bathroom for socialization. That is how I ended up with Flounder, Sardine, Trout, and Scallop, or The School of Fish, as they're known collectively.
Three years later they are a vibrant part of my multi-cat household, but were I held at gunpoint and forced to name a favorite, it would be Flounder. There's something about his big eyes! Plus, he's been ill twice with what my vet calls "fever of an unknown origin," not uncommon, but worrisome when fluids don't clear it up quickly. The first time it happened Flounder was a kitten and had to stay at the vet for a couple of nights. Then just five weeks ago it happened again. This time he had fluids in a bag three times at the vet and an antibiotic injection, but the fever would not go away. My vet admitted to being a bit concerned. As a pessimist, I was sure I'd lose him, but he just bounced back after a couple weeks, and now he's my good old Flea Fly Flounder again!
Flounder is energetic in the mornings and evenings. He loves his toy mice and occasionally will take one into the bathtub and play alone in there. Helping change the sheets is one of his favorite activities. One of the great things he did when younger is he would get between the shower curtain and the liner and I'd spray the clear liner and he'd try to grab the water he could see. I think perhaps that ended because cat claw holes in the liner meant he was getting wet, and then it wasn't fun anymore. He is very responsive to me and comes about 90% of the time I call for him. He's just got a great personality, as do all the siblings in the school of fish. At just past three years old now, they remain playmates. I'm so happy I decided to keep them!
