Tuna, the Cat of the Day
Name: Tuna
Age: Seven months old
Gender: Female
Kind: Medium-haired field cat
Home: Vermont, USA

In September, a dog taking a walk with his owner found a small, skinny, very hungry kitten abandoned in a field. The kitten got passed from care-giver to care-giver and then she landed with my friend until the end of October when we adopted her. The kitten came with her name, Tuna, and a lot of personality!

Tuna has a long torso and short legs so she does not leap very high but she has plenty of speed. She loves to race up and down stairs, and around the furniture, usually while exclaiming her favorite phrase, "mrrp." One of her amusements right now is to take a flying leap onto a rocking footstool and bounce off of it. She also likes to lay in wait for people and other cats, and of course she likes to play tag, especially when visiting with her rabbit friend, Harley. She will flatten herself as much as possible on the stair steps or at the bottom of the stairs to watch people's feet coming at her. Apparently that vantage point is thrilling - but it can make a simple walk downstairs quite exciting in the early morning hours when she looks like a shadow!

Tuna is a champion eater, probably due to the lingering memory of deprivation in her early history. If a piece of steamed broccoli hits the floor it is consumed instantly. If you turn your back on the bowl of chips you just poured and are putting away the bag, beware! That little rustling sound is Tuna making off with one of your chips! And never, ever, take your eyes off of your crunchy cereal o's! Spicy Chinese food with red pepper flakes in it? She'll eat that too if you are not careful. And if we happen to be cooking fish - well, do you remember the flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz? Tuna turns into one of those and has to spend dinner time in the mudroom.

Tuna has a few nick names: Bat-Cat, Battle Kitten (when she rough-houses with her cat-friends, armed with her extra-large cattitude, she folds her ears and looks like she is wearing a battle helmet), and Goat Cat. She does not like to be held but she enjoys a good cuddle; if you sit down she will come sit on you. She likes to wake people in the morning by kneading on an arm or shoulder. Tuna's top activities are: eating, playing, exploring in dusty spots so that she has debris stuck to her, lurking in paper bags that have been 'improved' with a paw-sized hole to grab passers-by, and sleeping. Mrrp!
