Today's Cat of the Day

Manny, Sam, the Cat of the Day
Name: Manny, Sam
Age: Eight years old
Gender: Male
Kind: DSH Orange Tabby
Home: Pasadena, California, USA

Soon after we lost our beloved cat Max, we went to the Pasadena Humane Society to search for a new pet. We were looking for two or three large adult cats, the hardest cats to adopt. As cat lovers we figured we should go for the ones that really needed a second chance. As soon as I walked into the cat room, I saw a beckoning face that reminded me of one of my favorite childhood pets. When I held him it was as if we had known each other forever. And there was a bonus - a second cat face stared out from the litter box. The brother was a little sick, but it turned out this cat was to become my soul mate. These two orangemen were found wandering the streets of Pasadena and didn't even have names.

We named the solid cat Manny (short for Immanuel Kant, as this cat is the philosophical type; his other nickname is Perfect) and the cat with some white Sam (short for Samuel Johnson, the man about town; his other nickname is Precious). Sam was the scrappy protector of Manny on the mean streets, and we still have to keep him away from our son's Akita. Sam went into attack mode as soon as he saw the dog. Manny has the sweetest, softest voice, but Sam is loud. They are very devoted, and spend all their time together. Three years ago we almost lost Manny to a urinary tract blockage, but our vet was able to save his life and he's been fine since. When Manny came back from a week at the vet's Sam treated him like a complete stranger, with all those odd smells. It took a week for Sam to remember they are loving brothers.

Manny is the very best sleeping cat. At night, he cuddles right next to my head and stays there until I get up. Sam cuddles next to my husband's feet and gets us up very early. He loves to bat at your feet.

Manny and Sam both do all sorts of cat work: looking cute; producing relaxing purring sounds; scaring away mice, moths, and silverfish; lending a sympathetic ear; keeping laps warm; and serving as alarm clocks. Plus giving the unconditional, dedicated, non- judgmental love that only a pet can. We still can't figure out how anyone could abandon these dear cats to fend for themselves. But now they are happy and safe in their forever home, as every cat should be.
