Back in August of 2012 I was debating on whether or not to adopt a kitty because my beloved Calico named Sugar had passed away at the age of 17 earlier that year.
Then, a friend of mine alerted me to a story in our local Toronto paper about black cats and how difficult it is to for them to get adopted and I had not heard this before so right away I decided to go to our local Humane Society to take a look.
It was the end of August and they had a lot of cats. I looked at them and approached a cage that had a box in it with a hiding cat. The sign said her name was Nila. Then, Nila came out and she is a tiny cat. She hissed at me too so it wasn't love at first sight for her. Nila was a year and one month old. I don't know what her name means but that was the name the Humane Society gave her and I can imagine she was named after some brave lady.
I adopted Nila and all the home on public transportation she didn't utter a sound and I wondered if she was going to hate me or not. I got her home and took her out of the carrying case and just let her hide not knowing how long that would be. I just started tidying up my place and just let her be. After a couple of hours I was sorting my cds and out she came and I will never forget the look on her face. She was smiling with her eyes and almost like saying "thank you for adopting me."
Nila is a very timid kitty and I have no idea what she went through before I adopted her but I have a feeling she had been abused in some way and she is even more scared of men. Nila is also very playful. She loves to play catch and this activity can occur at any given moment at bedtime or even 3 am and her favourite toy is a foam rubber ball. She also loves to be rubbed and scratched under her chin. Nila doesn't like to be held for more than a few minutes and also does not like confined spaces. She is not the type of cat who likes to crawl into boxes and I think someone might have tormented her in some way. Nila is very clean and the UNsmelliest cat in the world, not that it would be a deal breaker, but just one more redeeming quality of my sweet girl. She does enjoy lying on my legs while I am watching tv and has to be facing away from me. Nila turned four in early July and is really a very sweet and adorable kitty. People are hesitant to adopt black cats for various reasons but Nila is the sweetest cat I have ever had.
