Anyone who knows me knows that I have always been and will always be a cat person. When I was little, we had a variety of cats, but they were all outdoor pets who were often lost. Though I loved these cats, I never had a special relationship with any of them. I went to college when I was 18 and for the first few years lived in dorms or apartments with roommates. In my last year, I was finally going to live by myself and I decided it was time for something I always wanted - my very own cat.
I went to one of our area shelters with a friend on a warm day in early July. We were waiting in line to see available animals when a woman with two kittens approached us. She was trying to give the cats to the shelter and asked if I was looking for a pet. I told her I could not take both of them, but would be interested in one and since one was better than none, a sweet striped kitten with a white tummy and socks came home with me. My friend's sister, who was in town for a wedding, ended up suggesting the name that would stick - Maddy.
Maddy is now fourteen years old. She has lived in six apartments and one house, with one roommate, one boyfriend who later became a husband, the roommate's two cats and two of my cats, one of which has passed away. For almost a decade, she was the only constant in my life. And that special relationship I had always longed for with a pet I have definitely found with Maddy. We often say she has "separation anxiety" from me or she thinks that I am her mother because wherever I am in the house, Maddy is sure to not be far behind. From her endearing bad habits (pinholes in the curtains from when she was a kitten, meowing sometimes too much) to her sweet nature of purring and curling up next to me with her head on my arm to take a nap, Maddy has been such a blessing in my life. She is my very first kitty who was all my own and I wouldn't trade her for the world.
