We adopted Norman about three and a half years ago from a local shelter. His cage was marked "Feral – Do Not Touch", so not knowing what feral even meant, we stayed away. But after taking a look around, we didn't find any cats that we "clicked" with, and were about to leave. Then the director of the shelter asked us what kind of cat we were looking for. I told her we didn't care about age or anything else, but just wanted a sweet personality. She hesitantly looked at us for a moment, and then brought us to Norman's cage. He was sitting all the way in the back and looked very scared. Apparently he was part of a group of feral cats they had caught, neutered and micro-chipped. I'm not sure if it was his beautiful markings or something they saw in his personality, but the shelter thought they might be able to spend enough time with Norman where he could be adoptable. Otherwise, he would have been let back into "the wild" with the rest of the feral kitties. We later found out he was actually featured in the local paper in an article about the county's feral cat program!
Anyhow, I pet him for a bit and immediately fell in love, but my husband was the real test. He had never had pets and wasn't totally sure getting a cat was even a good idea (we had a tiny, one bedroom in the city at the time). Luckily, Norman loved my husband and didn't want to let go when it was time to put him back down. It was very sweet.
Norman is now about four years old. He's still a little skittish, but has come a long way. When we first brought him home he would hide under furniture for most of the day so he could feel safe. Now he enjoys his days sunning himself on his window perch and bird- watching off our back deck (we moved to a bigger house, out of the city). He's also quite particular about his fur, and is constantly washing it and making sure it stays clean and glossy. He is not fond of the camera, however, but you can see from this picture not only his beautiful markings, but how he manages to take up the whole length of the bookshelf, surely hard at work keeping those books from escaping. Norman's a real member of the family, and we feel lucky to have found him =^^=
