Jade the Cat
Name: Jade
Age: Two years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Cat
Home: Newport, Rhode Island, USA

Jade started purring the moment I walked into the greeting room at the Potter League Animal Shelter. It was a done deal when she ran across the room meeering to me. She is two years old, but we usually say 24 months (don't tell her she's not a kitten anymore, she is convinced she is).

The books say "allow your newly adopted cat to acclimate in a small room," and "let the kitty emerge from the box in their own time." Jade hopped out like a broadway star, opened the door and has been ruling the house ever since.

In the spring we discovered the joy of open windows, where she can sit for hours chattering at the birds, puffing up at the neighborhood cats (we don't like other kitties in our space!), and sleeping in the window sills. Jade walks three or four times a day on a leash around the garden and loved chasing but not catching summer crickets. The leash walking thing was tricky at first but now she has her mom trained its pretty smooth. Jade responds to "let's go" "careful" "up" "down" and "no way, not happening, don't even think about it." Responding is not the same thing as obeying.

Jade also answers to "Peaches," which her Auntie Chelle calls her when she cat sits. Well, I call it cat sitting; mostly they hang out, watch sappy movies, and compare gossip. I think there are pony rides and maybe ice cream involved. I don't ask and they a pretty happy together.

Peaches has become a purring snugly cat who leans into shoulder scratches after 18 months of being regularly mauled by her mom and Auntie. As a shelter cat she didn't get picked up much, so her tail used to beat against her human, but now she is all purrs and she knows how to warn us about getting overstimulated.

Jade greets me first thing in the morning with delight, sneaks a purr in at bed time, and brings joy into my every day. She's a poster-kitty for shelter adoptions. I'm blessed to have her live with me and she's a precious precious kitty.
