This
is "Mr. Dobbs" or "Dobbie" as we call him. We adopted him from a pet
shop over ten years ago. When we entered the shop, he was sitting in a
large parrot cage near the front door. He reached through the cage bars
and "tapped" us on the arms. He seemed so out of place in the parrot cage.
He continued to tap as we spoke to him. All that tapping impressed us.
That evening, we returned and adopted him.
Tapping is still a big deal for Dobbie! To this day, when he wants to be
petted, he sits beside us and repeatedly taps us on the hand or arm If we
pet him without first being tapped, he complains. Petting has to be on
his terms. It took time to work on Dobbie's table manners. You see, while
we were eating a steak dinner his first evening with us, he jumped up,
grabbed my steak off the plate, and ran with it. He now gets spoiled with
small pieces of steak, ham or shrimp that he politely eats out of a
bowl.Dobbie is a large, muscular cat, the size of a small dog. He is
quite shy, has a soft meow, and avoids house guests. If he is hiding, all
we have to do is say the word "treat" and he comes running.
His life-long companion, our beloved fourteen year old male cat, passed
away last month. They were inseparable. They were best buddies and slept
together and washed each other's faces, etc. One night three months ago,
Chico escaped and was outside for three days and two nights. At 3:30 the
third night, Dobbie came into our bedroom and cried insessantly. We got up
and followed him to the front door. When we opened the door, there was
Chico!! We were ecstatic. Dobbie, a quiet guy, knew his best friend was
home (kind of like Lassie barking to say Timmy is in the well!!). We have
since lost Chico due to cancer, but Dobbie is helping us get through his
loss. He is slowly recovering from his loss and is now the best companion
to our petite four-year-old calico. Their favorite activity is to sit side
by side at the patio door and watch the world go by. He is a gentle giant
and she is his tiny sidekick.
