Meet
Hank Fernando, our unusual rescue from Ixtapa, Mexico. We hadn't
intended to bring a cat home from our family vacation, but we adopted Hank
from our tour guide's (mother's) farm nonetheless. He was only a couple weeks
old and in pretty rough condition, so he won us over from the start. We
brought him to the vet, got him everything a tiny kitten would need
(including cat formula and a bottle-he was so young he still needed milk),
and took him home to Minnesota the next day on the airplane!
We don't know exactly what mix of breeds he is, but he resembles a Siamese in
looks and personality. Hank is extremely expressive with a plethora of both
facial expressions and different words.
For a large portion of his life Hank lived with three hunting dogs, and he is
definitely one of the pack. In fact, we are pretty sure he thinks he is a
dog. Hank is only content wearing (toy sized) dog collars, he has maneuvered
his way out of every cat collar we have tried buying him!
Hank's motto in life is, "I do what I want, when I want." This includes being
photographed. He does not particularly like being interrupted from his
fabulousness for a picture and has mastered the cranky face. Some have dubbed
him 'mean kitty' because of his unwillingness to show affection towards
visitors, but he is a misunderstood kitty! He's just a private guy who values
quality over quantity of friends. Who needs strangers petting you in front of
everyone? Not Hank! He won't hesitate to give the cranky face if someone
invades his personal bubble.
Hank's three favorite things are: 1. Food 2. Warm snuggles and 3. Water. Hank
loves milk, and will wait as close as humanly possible to your breakfast
cereal just to get a little taste at the end. If you sit down for more than a
few minutes Hank will lay right on top of you-- as long as you don't move too
much or bother him. For Hank, every room is an opportunity for a drink. He
shares water dishes with the dogs, has one of his very own, and pleads for
you to turn on faucets to create a personal kitty drinking fountain.
Hank takes his looks very seriously and bathes at least three times a day and
any time someone touches him and messes up his coat. Because of this, he is
so so very soft! But if you want to pet Hank, you must make it onto his VIP
list (which requires daily pampering and special attention).
Hank is particularly special to me. In the spring of 2014, I moved back in
with my parents (and Hank of course) because I was dealing with health issues
and side effects of prescriptions. These kept me in bed for most of the day.
Starting with warm snuggles nearly 24/7, Hank was just the gentle and soft
friend I needed!
He has learned many tricks since then such as come, sit, wait, let's go to
our room, and it's time for bed. The cutest by far is when he gets bedtime
treats and responds with a sort of purr slash soft meow when I ask, "What
does a nice kitty say?".
We love giving each other kitty kisses - when we look into each other's eyes
and blink very slowly a couple times - and I know I have found a devoted
friend and companion with Hank!
