Allow me to introduce you to LucyFur, a six-month-old tabby who lives in Ottawa. When our beloved Catastrophe suddenly passed away at the age of 17 this past October, my husband and I were devastated. Joolz and Frankie also had a difficult time recovering from the shock.
There's a local organization that I follow and support – the Ottawa Stray Cat Rescue – I knew they were having a record breaking year for rescues/fosters and that they were bursting at the seams with cats and kittens needing a good home. I had suggested to my husband that we take foster cats/kittens in our home, but we both knew if we did, they would never leave so that idea was rejected.
Several weeks later, while on vacation in Mexico, the Rescue had posted photos of a litter of kittens who had been rescued and they were adorable! Knoedle, as she was known at the time, was only ten weeks old and weighed less than 700 grams but was a charmer. After some discussion, we decided to visit her upon our return from the trip and we were smitten from the moment we saw her. A few days later we brought her home and renamed her LucyFur.
Her introduction to the resident girls is taking longer than expected; Lucy's boundless kitten energy is just too much for Joolz, who is now 14 years old and very frail. We can't leave the two of them alone yet since Lucy tends to stalk and attack Joolz every chance she gets. She's not trying her to hurt her, she's only playing, but she's just too rough for Joolz, and since they are about the same size, there's a real risk of injury. We always ensure that one of us is around to supervise them when they are together. Frankie has no problem asserting her dominance over the little one since she is a big girl, so we don't worry about them. Lucy is doing better with time and we know that with love and patience we'll get there!
LucyFur is such a joy; she makes us laugh with her crazy antics and, as fate would have it, she shares many of Catastrophe's mannerisms: carrying their favorite toy in her mouth, playing with straws in their paper wrappers, drooling when being cuddled and the list goes on. While she will never replace Catastrophe in our hearts, she has certainly helped them mend.
